Notes
Tom made a visit to Mpumiro village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as encouraging residents that have not yet finished their hand washing stands to do so. When Tom arrived in the village, he was welcomed by the chairman of the village and two committee members. . Tom and the chairman together with the committee members first had a brief meeting to discuss about the program and their results from the evaluation that they made as a committee. One of the VHTS who carried out the evaluation brought his results which showed that 76% of the homes had latrines. Tom asked about the other homes without the latrines and they pointed out that they are still under construction and only three residents in the village were yet to start on even digging the pit. This was not the sample of the whole village though. Tom encouraged the chairman to continue moving around especially in those homes to make sure that they finish their latrines and other facilities. After the meeting, they moved around the village in the upper section where they found a resident working on his latrine. He had just started putting logs on the but some of the logs were not on standard. Tom encouraged the resident to get better logs and also advised him to use mud for the floor of the latrine. After they also spoke to a resident who has had her latrine pit not constructed on for so long. The woman requested the chairman to speak to her husband as for her she has spoken for so long but seems her husband never delivers on his promises to finish the latrine. The chairman also agreed to speak to him and encourage him to finish the latrine. On the issue of the hand washing stands, they found when one of the committee members had just finished constructing two hand washing stands for two residents. Tom also handed them the jericans and they were very happy. In another section of the village, they found a resident who had started on a new latrine by digging a new pit. They thanked the residents for being proactive and starting on facilities early. In one home, they end the resident to construct the dish rack, kitchen and rubbish pit for his home. As they moved around, they were also encouraging residents to construct better standards dish racks for their homes to improve on the sanitation and hygiene.
