Notes
Introduction Lorna taught on Gender roles and responsibilities. This lesson is taught so that men and women , girls and boys can learn their responsibilities. To also know their ideas concerning role sharing. Overview The meeting started at 1;30pm with a word of prayer from one of the community members and the chairman gave an opening remark and thereafter Lorna took over. The meeting started by Lorna asking the community members for a review of the previous lesson which was on Love and self esteem. Lorna also added that love is sacrifice, not self seeking, love is patient , forgiving and under self esteem she mentioned members should love themselves completely self esteem starts from one understanding themselves and not suffering in silence. Having low self esteem robs one of their capacity and their full potential. Lorna asked the community members to believe in themselves. After the review, they looked at gender roles and responsibilities. They were able to define Gender and roles and also responsibilities. Lorna also asked them whether both men and women fulfill their roles and responsibilities in their homes. Some said yes others said no. They went ahead and looked at some of the roles of both men and women in the home. Lorna started by asking them what is the role of a man in the home or for the case of the children , Lorna asked them what was the role of men in a home. They were 4 men where one said to ensure there is food in the house, building the necessary facilities, buying clothes, Decision making , Digging among others when we went to the women’s side they mentioned; cooking, serving guests, sweeping compound, washing plates, washing clothes, gathering firewood, giving birth ,caring for child, fetching water among others. Lorna asked them can these roles be shared for example can men cook?, Moses got up and said yes for him he has no problem cooking and in his home him and his wife share roles and he cooks. He gave an example of some men who sit back and let their women do everything. He continued and said some men come from digging and let their women even carry their hoes , the same woman is carrying a baby , gathering firewood and is coming home to cook. He mentioned she has not even rested has not even bathed , the man is asking for food and yet they are both from the garden. Lorna stopped Moses there and asked the other men present what they think about that. The chairman Richard mentioned for him his role as a man is to marry a woman and make decisions on how the home should run but when it comes to roles like cooking, he thinks that’s the work of a woman. He however said that he can cook maybe if the wife is sick, has gone somewhere but if she is around he cannon. One lady asked to speak and said for her she thinks a man should not cook and agreed with the chairman that they can only cook when sick , oh have travelled somewhere but it is not right for them to cook. Lorna asked Fred what he thought about it but Fred just laughed and walked away. Lorna noticed the wife in the meeting speaking to herself which showed that he was not really agreeing with what was being taught let alone help his wife at home. Moses said this is a home for 2 people and therefore they should work together to see that everyone is happy. He said maybe you don’t have to cook but help push the firewood when perhaps your wife is bathing or attending to the child. The chairman was still disagreeing with this. Lorna asked the teens whether their parents do this work they said yes but others don’t. This was a very interesting conversation. Lorna then asked the teens what some of them what are some of their roles?, Oliver mentioned that for her , her role is to welcome guests, help with house chores like ; washing plates, cooking, sweeping the compound among others. Mercy mentioned the same like Oliver. The rains disorganized us a bit but Lorna informed the community that we were are not picking sides here or supporting anything but just to open our mind to the fact that it doesn’t make a man less of a man if he does these chores. Lorna mentioned a family works like a human body and that if one is not happy then the whole family is disorganized. Conclusion Lorna mentioned that they will continue with this topic in the next meeting but asked those who attended to try and get more men on board because some women were mentioning that their husbands are not here and it’s hard for them to pass on the message. The chairman was urged to mobilize a few other men and reach out to the husbands of these women and other women too.
