Notes
This trip to Kisiro was to encourage the village leaders, water and sanitation committee members to work together and ensure that Kisiro village maintain a safe water chain. The sanitation standards have to be encouraged in every home and it’s the role of the village leaders to remind people during village gatherings like at the funerals and other meetings. Because of the large size of the village, it has had a lot of challenges to manage but WASH staff continues to engage the village to work together and engage people to understand the values of proper sanitation and hygiene practices in their homes. Unfortunately the water user committee that had been in place before, many of the people had become inactive and left only one person active. Nothing had been done since the previous visit when Alex told them to mobilize for more materials to build a standard wall fence structure. The one that the community had come up with was very weak and had started to fall apart because the builder didn’t follow what he was told to do by WASH. The village chairman was encouraged and promised to come up with a village meeting and replace the inactive water user committee members. When the village eventually comes up with water user committee, they will be trained again before the borehole commissioning is done as this is a requirement by the government. Alex also visited some homes on his way to the new well and encouraged people to maintain the good sanitation standards mostly during this rain season. The village leaders were also encouraged to continue reminding all the people about good sanitation standards during their village gatherings like funerals. The borehole commissioning is expected sometime in January 2021 having promised to complete the construction of the wall fence and active water user committee is in place.
