Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet,Tape, Jessica and Suzan went to Ituba Namalowe to take incentives to the members who participated in the healthy and safe kitchens program. When they reached Namutumba district, Kibo staff picked the C.D.O madam Cissy and together they agreed to first visit a few member’s homes at the upper section. The group chairperson madam Catherine with some members welcomed them to the village and Harriet requested to first go and check on the maintenance of the borehole and other facilities before proceeding to the lower section of the village where the majority of the members were gathered. As they moved home to home with the C.D.O, it was observed that some members had greatly improved on their sanitation and hygiene and some facilities were well maintained such as the fuel efficient stoves, dish racks, shower areas although some pit latrines had fallen down due to the heavy rain storms. Harriet and madam Cissy decided to go to the center and make a few announcements over the microphone thanking the community for maintaining their facilities. They also requested them to see that they improved ygiene around the borehole especially fencing it and stopping the children from mishandling it. Later after, they went to the lower section of the village and found almost all the community members who participated in the program lessons gathered outside the chairperson’s home which was neatly arranged and decorated. Before settling down for the meeting, they again first moved around the village and visited a few homes while monitoring different facilities. It was also observed that the members had managed to maintain most of their facilities and the stoves were all well smeared and decorated with different flowers and colors. The members happily got up and welcomed the guests while singing and dancing. Tape chaired the meeting that day and requested one of the members to say a brief prayer before it began. She welcomed everyone from both sides of the village and then gave each Kibo staff opportunity to briefly talk to the community members. Suzan, Jessica and Harriet thanked the members for participating in the program activities and wished them to always continue with the same spirit of working together as a team. Harriet being the program leader, went ahead and encouraged the members to always improve and maintain all their facilities as much as possible so that they lived a better healthy life with their families. She also requested them to cook on their new improved stoves so that they would enjoy the benefits such as saving firewood and time for other activities, smokeless kitchens and faster cooking. The CDO was also given opportunity to talk to the members, she went ahead and thanked them for accepting the program and encouraged them form a savings group whereby they would save some money after building stoves for other new members especially at their neighboring villages. She let them know how they were going to receive a few gifts as a sign of appreciation from Kibo group members. The moment the members heard about the incentives, they jumped up and began dancing and singing on top of their voices while praising Kibo group for the educational programs introduced totheir village. Each member received a piece of soap with two big saucepans which they would use together whenever they had any function. Harriet also encouraged them to add on other things such as cups, plates and spoons so that they would form a big group. The members thanked Kibo for the presents and requested them to introduce more programs that would benefit them and the meeting finally came to an end.
