Notes
When Tom reaches to the village, he found when the chairman and other committee members had left the meeting place to go to the upper section and settle a dispute in one home. Tom and three members waited but later one committee members called them and they suggested that the meeting should go ahead without them because they were not going to come soon. The three committee members suggested to Tom that instead of meeting, they should instead move around in some specific homes. Tom agreed but before they set off to move around, Tom asked them about the general feel about the program of sanitation and hygiene especially through the festive season ams up to now. The committee members said the village has embraced the program and many residents have continued to improve especially through the construction of latrines. On the issue of the hand washing, one committee member said there has been some reluctance in some homes to practice hand washing as some people don’t put the jericans on a daily basis. The committee members also mentioned that there has been an improvement in the construction of dish racks. After the short meeting, they started to move around the village. Tom and the committee members moved in a section of the village next to the trading center. In this section they found three newly constructed latrines and a new pit being dug. One resident had recently constructed the slab on the pit and had constructed the structure as well. The resident said he was waiting to harvest his remaining rice and finish with the construction of the structure. Tom encouraged the resident to make sure that he roofs his Latrine so that it could last longer. The residents neighbor also finished his pit and he is also waiting to harvest his rice to buy materials for the construction of the latrine structure on the pit. As they moved around, they met four homes each home with its hand washing stand with water and kept clean. Tom asked on of the residents in the home on how they have benefited from the hand washing program. The resident said he was very happy because since his family embraced hand washing, he has seen a big reduction in diseases in his home especially in his children. This was also affirmed by one of the committee members who said he also feels the same about his family. The also visited another committee member who has recently fallen sick. It’s good that they found her improving. She could also walk. The committee member was happy for Tom visiting her in her home with the other committee members. After Tom drove towards the lower section as he wanted to observe the improvements as he drove out of the village. As he drove, he observes that most homes still had their hand washing stands and latrines.
