Notes
Introduction Lorna was in this village to carry out an Assessment concerning the topics of Life Skills Education. This is to measure the community’s knowledge on the life Skills topics and also know which topics to begin with. Also to create awareness on Personal hygiene. Overview On arrival Lorna met no people at the meeting place but eventually they came one by one. The meeting was opened with a word of prayer theRe after the acting chairman opened the meeting. She started by apologizing that the chairman was not going to be present because of some issues and that he sent his apologies. We then had a brief introduction of community members and thereafter ,Lorna introduced herself to the community members and thanked them for working together with Kibo Group under the WASH program. Lorna then started by defining what Life Skills is and then mentioned that since this was the first meeting, they were going to go through an Assessment which is like a yes or No response concerning knowledge on Life Skills topics. She also mentioned to the community that they would also look at Personal hygiene just to remind ourselves of some little details we ignore. Lorna asked the community questions on HIV /AIDS, If its a problem in the community and asked how many people have tested their status and a few people raised their hands, On decision making she asked them what is good decision making, who is responsible for making decisions at home and some said women, others men , others both , On communication skills we asked if parents communicate to their children , what good communication is among others. Lorna saw they did have some ideas on some topics and not much in others in the next meeting shewill ask the group what topic to start with. Under personal hygiene Lorna also mentioned that these things were not new but most of the diseases we get are due to poor hygiene habits and yet these are all preventable. She mentioned that we will be looking at ; Handwashing , Clothes hygiene, Oral hygiene , body hygiene and menstrual hygiene. Lorna asked the community members when we should wash our hands and why we need to wash them. We also had 4 community members demonstrating and Lorna asked the community who did it right. Lorna urged them to take time washing their hands because it’s the biggest carrier of germs. We also looked at oral hygiene and the importance of brushing our teeth and at what times to brush. On body hygiene we discussed the importance of showering like to smell fresh, be presentable , respectable as well as clothes hygiene and the importance of having clean clothes, ironing and not wearing dump clothes. Lorna also encouraged parents to buy soap and also underwear for their children. Conclusion Lorna encouraged the community that personal hygiene is everyone’s responsibility and not only for themselves but also they should ensure the same practice and routine is done by their children and they should explain why they should do it. In the next meeting, they will look at Menstrual hygiene and management. Lorna left them with homework on Symptoms leading to menstruation. The acting chairperson thanked Lorna for the lesson and thanked the community for attending.
