Notes
Tom made a visit to Mpumiro village to meet with community members and leaders to select a water user committee and teach about their roles and responsibilities before a borehole is drilled. When he arrived in the meeting, he found when some of the committee members were mobilizing the village members to come to the meeting. The chairman was not available that day as he was at the sub-county for a meeting. After the mobilizations, some of the committee members can to the meeting to wait for other residents to arrive. While they waited for the members of the village to arrive, Tom asked about how the village was doing especially in sanitation and hygiene improvements. The committee members said that there many new dish racks that have recently been constructed and are on standard. They also expressed concern over some residents who have not yet finished their facilities especially two homes which are yet to construct on their latrine pits. The chairman also recently started on a new latrine at his new home where he is moving. Finally after some residents had arrived and the number had increase a bit, the selection of the water user committee was conducted and women were well represented on the committee through positions like the treasurer, care taker and women representative. After the selection of the committee, Tom took the community and the new selected committee members through the costs that the village needs towards the borehole especially the borehole account, contribution towards building the wall fence and also feeding and caring for the drillers. Tom also took the time to encourage the newly selected committee about their roles and responsibilities before the the survey which include collecting and mobilizing residents towards collecting the money as well as continuing with encouraging residents towards sanitation and hygiene improvements.
