Notes
Alex first met with the committee spear heading the program of hand washing in Maliga village. A team of four has worked very hard to construct now 14 hand washing stands in the village with in the first one week. Alex met with them to check next the standards of the to facilities so far constructed in the village and whether the new idea was being embraced by many people in the village. On a very good note, the village has responded very well so far with many people contributing towards buying cement to construct hand washing stands in their homes. The first four days saw the committee construct 14 stands and many people have shown interest to have them in their homes asking the committee when they can receive one in their homes. Most of the people have requested to have their stands constructed next to the pit latrine to promote hand washing after visiting the pit latrine. A bag of cement can construct up to 14 stands and it requires 5 kilos of cement to construct one stand in a home. It’s required that a village contribute half of the price on a bag and then Kibo group tops on the other half. More than 20 people had contributed for cemented and Alex or someone else in CEP will deliver cement to the village during the next visit. Alex then proceeded to Kamudoke village to meet with the new sanitation committee to discuss about their roles and responsibilities and how they will be conducting their home to home visits in the village. It’s very important that the village sanitation committee understands that a big responsibility lies a head of them to make sure that all people change their behaviors because of their encouragement. They have to also know that they are act as examples to the rest of the people in the village and so they have to change before others in the village can also comply. The committee needs to know also that the village will only change if they are all active and not wait for Kibo staff to do it all. The committee members led by Tagoola promised to move as team for at least two times a week moving home to home encouraging people to construct standard facilities in their homes. The committee reported that all the four pick axes were busy being used by people in the village a sign that people are responding positively to the WASH program. The Wash staff will go back to continue conducting follow ups in the village moving home to home together with the sanitation committee.
