Notes
Tom made a visit to Kalalu village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as facility constructions. When he arrived in the village, it had rained the night before and the village was very hard to drive through to the meeting place with a car. Tom and one committee members who comes from the upper section together Walked to the meeting place. They found when two members were present and because the weather was still cloudy and threatening, one of the committee members suggested that there are some specific homes that he wanted the committee to visit with Tom. With that they left and walked to that section of the village but along the way, they visited four homes. One of the homes had a latrine under construction and the resident was encouraged on using better materials and methods to construct the latrine so that it lasts longer. In the other three homes, Tom and the committee members encouraged the residents on constructing of the hand washing stands and they did it have. Two of the homes were also encouraged to construct dish racks for their homes. As they reached to that section of the village, they found when Mr Bashir who did not have a latrine before recently finished his latrine. Even though he was not in his home as the time, His wife expressed her thanks to the committee members from r encouraging her husband t hand a latrine in the home. Next to Mr Bashir’s home was another home with a Latrine but with an improvised piece of plastic as the latrine door. It looked very dirty and unhygienic. Tom sensitized the committee members about constructing better and simple doors for their latrines. He said some of the dirty plastics and pieces of cloth as latrine doors are not good and they harbor germs . He encouraged the residents to use papyrus rids or old metal sheet or hard plastics as doors. One committee member said even mats can be used if they are secured property at the door. The other resident had a shower made or constructed using mosquito nets and other pieces of clothes. Tom also sensitized on the importance of using and sleeping under mosquito nets instead of using them to construct shower facilities. Tom mentioned that the mosquito net is not sustainable as it rots and spoils fast while constructing a shower using bricks and mud or cement can keep it stronger for a longer period of time. Many of the other homes visited were encouraged on having standard facilities especially the dish racks. But mostly residents in this section of the village have latrines but a few remain go the encouraged and sensitized.
