Notes
Introduction Lorna went to Ikumbya for the second time to carry out mobilization for the beginning of the Life Skills program. Overview When Lorna arrived the village she found some community members already gathered at the meeting place and on seeing the car they came towards the car singing songs and ululating. They welcomed Lorna to the meeting place and later were joined by other community members. An Agenda was drawn which was started with an opening prayer and the chairperson gave his remarks and then after the chairman they invited Lorna to address them. Lorna greeted and thanked them for coming in big numbers but mentioned that today she was just really going to move around to get familiar with the community and mobilize the community for Friday. We moved to about 15 homes together with the community members where we managed to check on the sanitation facilities while mobilizing them at the same time. We were also able to look at the stoves where we found others cooking, others needed smearing since they have worked long enough. In another home we visited, they had just had a funeral so most of the nearby homes had their 3 stones back in the kitchens and on their compounds. Lorna asked why they had the cooking stones and they mentioned there were many mourners so everyone was cooking something since they are almost all related. In those where there were no stoves, they either did not have a kitchen or they did not qualify according to the stoves program. They however expressed interest for stoves, those with leaking roofs mentioned that they have a challenge of grass but they will find a way. We also looked at the borehole and a few mvule trees. Challenge Lorna also visited ikumbya primary school where the community took her to the site of the broken borehole and asked Kibo to kindly repair this borehole for the sake of the students as currently they use the oneKibo drilled in the community which affects their learning. They showed Lorna a classroom block the parents were trying to build but because of resources it’s on pause. They also took Lorna to the latrine the students use which is in a very sorry state . There hopes are so high that they requested Lorna if there was any help to please consider. Conclusion After that we came back to the meeting place and Lorna thanked the community members for turning up and told them in the next visit we will do an assessment of the Life skills lesson and talk about personal hygiene. She thanked them for coming out in big numbers and also asked that on the next visit they do the same.
