Notes
Irene went to Ituba Namalowe to talk about immunization, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, challenges and solutions. The meeting started with a word of prayer from musa who congratulated the moslems for their fasting and encouraged them to stay United as members of one village so that they can develop. He then welcomed the chairman who like musa congratulated the moslems on finishing their fasting period., thanked members for turning up,and kibo for the good work they do in their community. The chairman then welcomed Irene to say a word to the members. Irene thanked the chairman for the opportunity given, welcomed the members for turning up,and then still urged the family members of the mothers who gave birth to take care of them, support them, and help them have enough to eat and rest so that they look after their babies well. She then asked the members for a review of the previous lesson covered and an idea about the word immunization,it’s when we take the children for polio said shamina, it’s when we take children for measles injection and the mothers for tetanus injection added another member, on addition to that Irene said is when a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease by the administration of a vaccine. Vaccines stimulate the body’s own immune system to protect the person against infection or diseases. Irene further went to mention some of the diseases immunized against and among these discussed the members mentioned tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria Tetanus,Hepatitis B. Who should be immunized and with this Irene explained the immunization schedule in babies, and adults encouraging the members to embrace vaccines for once immunized Incase of an out break their family is protected as well as the community at some point. Irene further talked about the myths said about the vaccines that they cause brain damage, dis functioning in male reproductive system, barrenness in women, among others saying that vaccines are to give the body strength to fight the diseases but not to destroy the body as it’s said. Irene also discussed about importance of breastfeeding to the baby as getting all the nutrients their bodies need to grow well, protecting them from diseases since the milk is ready to take not going through several processes to get prepared,on addition to that the baby is bonded to the mother, it’s cheap because it’s really available, among others some of the barriers to breast feeding could include chronic illness, mental illness, malnutrition among others, poverty and domestic violence, it’s always important for communities, families, and mothers to be at peace during the breastfeeding period because once the mother is physiological or physically affected breast feeding and complementary feeding is affected. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended upto 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods upto two years of age or beyond. Complementary feeding practices should reflect Frequency of feeding,Amount/quantity of food, Thickness of food ,Variety of food ,Active feeding,Hygiene, appropriate frequency of feeding is dependent on,the child’s body size, energy needs,as a child grows, his/her energy needs from complementary foods increase, and he/she will need more meals to meet his/her needs, said Irene, some benefits of complementary feeding, nutrition is essential for survival, physical growth ,mental development ,performance, productivity health, from the earliest stages of fetal development, at birth, and through infancy, childhood, adolescence and on into adulthood. Irene added that it’s always important for a mother to go for antenatal, postnatal care at the hospital for support physiological support, learn to be creative income generating activities like rearing chicken, demo gardens and having a balanced diet.
