Notes
When Tom, Lorna, Justine and Henry reached the village, they moved around for a little while checking on some new facilities like latrines before they were joined by the vhts and the chairman. When afterwards the chairman arrived, Tom requested him to show them his new latrine which he proudly showed to the rest of kibo staff members who visited the village that day. After the vhts arrived, Tom introduced them to the visitors and like wise introduced the visitors from kibo to the vhts. They started moving around the village checking on sanitation improvements and encouraging the residents. In the first few homes of the vht, chairman and other residents, they saw 2 new latrines constructed of Cement as well as those constructed of bricks and mud. They afterwards moved to the home of the boy who had lost his sight and found him playing and healthy. They were all touched and thanked all kibo staff members who contributed towards his medication. His mother and father who they met on the way thanked kibo for all the help. They after moved to the lower section where they saw new latrines but in one home, they found a new latrine constructed of cement and was not being used. Tom asked the neighbours to that home to cover the temporary pit that children use as it’s unhealthy and encouraged them to tell the owner of the latrine to open it and start using it. They after moved towards the swamp to see where residents get water. They found the place and the chairman and the vhts also spoke about the swamp water as Henry interviewed them. As they were leaving the village. They saw a resident coming to the swamp to get water and they were very touched as the water was milky and frogs played in it. The chairman and the vhts said some residents who can’t access the borehole use it also for drinking. After the pond, they met the family of the sick child who has a complication excreting waste/defecating. Henry took some pictures of the child and also promised to follow up with some doctors from jinja to see if that child can be helped. After they visited two homes where new latrines were being constructed. One pit the resident used the circular pit method and he had constructed on it well. Tom also gave the resident further guidelines on how to construct the floor as well as the structure while in the other home, the walls of the new latrine had cracked. Tom together with Henry encouraged the resident and shared with him about some better construction techniques that will make the structure stronger and long lasting. In another home Tom destroyed the dishrack because it was in a very poor state even after continuous reminders on how to improve his dishrack. After, they all headed back to jinja.
