Notes
Enock and Martin visited the trading centre near the main road, checked on the sanitation of homes, schools which are around to also teach the children, and teachers the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene. They first walked around the few homes near the trading centre and met a family whose latrine broke down due to heavy rainfall though they had poorly constructed it. They understood the problem and had quickly started digging a new pit. The pit is now about 6ft deep, the plan is to dig up to 15ft deep then they start constructing on it. They continued and told us that in just one week, they will have completed constructing it since the need is too big. They are now using their neighbours latrine before they finish theirs. They counted about 7 newly constructed latrines in the trading centre at the main road, they also saw new dish racks and encouraged those without to also construct them after teaching them the benefits and uses of them. Despite of them having latrines, they encouraged them to continuously use ash to maintain the hygiene of the latrines, dig soak pits for proper drainage of water from the shower after taking a bath. This will keep the shower areas clean and neat. Some people have smeared so well the facilities hence increasing the beauty of their homes. On visiting the school in this community and this particular section, they first met with the head master and introduced them selves. The head master called Mr Odong Alex welcomed them to walk around to check on the latrine sanitation, maintenance, use and also teach the students the challenges of poor hygiene, benefits and solutions on how to improve on personal hygiene and hence good health and better mind to learn which will lead to more focus on their education so that they can strive. When they visited the school latrines, they saw many flies and they were smelling so badly. This gave them an opportunity to teach the use of ash everyday. During the demonstration of using ash, they saw how flies ran out and the latrines stopped smelling. They appreciated the good lessons and promised to improve on the sanitation of the school. After the meeting, they continued to check on the progress of latrine construction, dish racks, shower areas, kitchen areas, use of rubbish pits and other facilities. There are some many people who have also managed to construct good standard facilities. They visited the home of the Witch doctor who for long didn’t have a latrine in his home. The good news is he finally completed constructing a very nice latrine for his family. They appreciated him and encouraged him to always maintain the sanitation level of his home. Generally the community has greatly improved on their sanitation and hygiene.

2303 The gentleman standing near the latrine is called Mr Kabwa Patrick. He is the head of witchcraft practice in the whole village. For a period of 5 years his family never had a proper latrine. When we entered this community we encouraged, taught the importance of a proper latrine, shower area, dish rack, kitchen area, hand washing facilities concerning good sanitation and hygiene. He understood the lessons so well and decided to construct good facilities for his home. That’s a new latrine which has just been completed. Him and his wife are so happy to have such wonderful latrine in their home. They all appreciated the work kibo is doing to help them develop through good sanitation.
2306 This home is using the dish so well, you can see the utensils on the dish rack drying after washing them. The child was going in the house to call the mom to come and talk to the visitors. Generally the sanitation of this home has greatly improved, they have a kitchen which they didn’t have initially, shower area and proper latrine.
