Notes
When Tom arrived in the village, he found when the committee members and some other village members where waiting for him at the trading centre. They met and together they moved to the meeting place. After, the police officer from the sub-county also joined them for the meeting as well as the health assistant. During the meeting, the chairman of the village first welcomed every body and appreciated them for their presence. He also thanked the committee members for the work they have done and are continuing to do in the village sensitising and encouraging residents about sanitation and hygiene. He also thanked kibo for the great work done in the village through encouraging and teaching residents about sanitation and hygiene and greatly appreciated kibo for supporting them with the pick axes as well as the shovels. He said the pick-axes and shovels have been of great use in digging pits for the latrines as well as rubbish pits. He further encouraged the residents to take the opportunity and use them when they are still available. After his address, he invited Tom to talk to the residents. Tom also thanked them, for coming to the meeting and also thanked them for embracing the program of sanitation and hygiene. Tom thanked the committee members and encouraged them to continue encouraging and sensitising the community. After he asked the residents to share what they feel about the program as well as to find a way forward after some residents failed to meet the deadline. In the meeting, most residents appreciated the work and all of them agreed that the program is good and has helped the village so much. One resident also pointed out that he is so happy now to see his neighbours also with a latrine after not having one for years. On the issue of moving forward, most residents requested for some time forward about a week or a month so that also those that have not finished might do so. No specific time frame was agreed upon but most residents suggested that by end of April, most of the village will have finished their facilities such as latrines, dish racks, shower facilities, and kitchen. After the questions and suggestions from the residents, Tom invited the police officer to also address the community. He thanked kibo and Tom for the great work he’s doing in the community and encouraged the community to embrace the program. He also pointed out to them that he’s worked with kibo for a long time since he was in ivukula. He also spoke about the benefits of having latrines, dish racks, shower area and other facilities in the home because they help in reducing diseases hence living a healthier life as well as saving because of the reduction in medical expenses. During the meeting, there was a resident who requested for more time for widows to first harvest before they can work on their facilities because some need money. The police officer encouraged the committee members to talk to the relatives of the elderly people and widows to help them as it’s one of the ways to bless them after them blessing us since we were young. After the meeting they moved around to see what residents have done and they were able to see new pits being dug, latrines, dish racks being constructed as well as other facilities. The police officer thanked kibo for the great work and also promised to work with kibo in teaching, sensitising and encouraging communities about sanitation and hygiene.
