Notes
Manuela and Lorna went to Ikumbya village where they were to select groups as well as meet with the girls on the challenges they are facing in their homes. The meeting was opened by a word of prayer and thereafter the chairman addressed the community before welcoming Manuela and Lorna to teach them. Manuela and Lorna greeted the community and then went ahead to ask them what were the challenges that they have faced during this Covid season. Chairman mentioned the children not going to school, another man mentioned on addition to the chairman’s comment that they have got so used to working in the sugarcane plantation where they earn some money and yet even in these sugar cane plantations there are people who sell Alcohol and therefore the children are engaging in alcohol. Another community member mentioned that they don’t have money , business is slow and yet their families are demanding of them especially the women. Nabiryes husband gave shillings one million to his wife to start a business but instead decided to run away with another man leaving her children behind including a 14 year old pregnant girl while the boys are married. The men mentioned that from that example they will never entrust their wives with money or business but the women mentioned that one woman should not spoil it for every woman. Manuela and Lorna together with the community tried to find solutions to these problems and then mentioned that the next lesson to be taught will be gender roles since many other issues sprouted from there. After the group meeting, We were able to divide the group into 2 that is 20 : 20 per group where Lorna led one group and Manuela another. In the groups we had 2 volunteers share what they learnt from the general group discussion after which Manuela and Lorna met the 6 girls who briefly shared about their challenges in their homes with their parents. Some of the challenges mentioned were their parents wanting to marry them off, others were the house work is too much and they are tired ,another mentioned they are tired of home and just want to go back to school. Manuela and Lorna encouraged them and thereafter met separately with Aishas mum and Aisha. Aishas mother wants to marry off Aisha and therefore we wanted to find out what was the underlying cause. Manuela interviewed Aishas mother where Manuela asked her why she was forcing her daughter to get married. She said she was not forcing her but that she is a grown girl and that since she has no husband she has many children to raise single handedly. She mentioned there’s a lot on her hands yet she barely has a source of income.Even though Aishas mother was not direct about her wanting to send her daughter to marriage the conversation led Manuela to know that Aisha was indeed right about saying her mother wanting to marry her off. On the other hand Lorna and Aishas meeting, Aisha told Lorna that her mother makes her work a lot at home hard labor and keeps telling her how her breasts are huge and that she should get married. Lorna asked if there was anything she says to her mother, disrespectful for her to say that but she said she does everything she’s asked. Aisha ran away from home to stay with her aunt. Lorna advised her that body changes are beautiful and that she’s a beautiful girl , she encouraged her to have self esteem and pursue her dreams. Having big breasts does not mean one is ready to marry. Because of time, Manuela and Lorna will continue with this meeting to continue engaging Aisha and her mum on a way forward. This case was also reported to the sub county.
