Notes
Lorna went to Mpumiro village to meet with group C following up on the previous meeting with the village leaders concerning how to go forward with the Life Skills program. On this visit Lorna met with group C. This meeting was conducted at the vice chairman’s place. It was started with an opening prayer and thereafter an introduction of every member in attendence after which Lorna took over the meeting. Lorna started by greeting everybody and asking how they were doing which was followed by a review of the previous topic on HIV/AIDS, since this was a new section, many faces were new. Lorna asked those who attended the previous lesson to bring up to speed the other community members. We discussed how HIV is spread, transmitted, cure and treatment, among others. Lorna asked the children present how HIV can be a problem to them and how they can acquire it. Sannon 19 years mentioned that one can acquire it through sex , another about the same age mentioned through sharing some instruments. When Lorna asked the teenagers what else , they seemed not to know. Lorna encouraged the other parents to share other ways. Lorna also added that one can be born with HIV, it doesn’t necessarily mean everyone who has HIV acquired it through sex. During delivery, in accidents among others. Sannon asked what if he has HIV and does not want his partner to get it what should he do. Aziz the chairman advised him three things; Abstain, use a condom, seek help from the hospital about options available. Lorna thanked them all and then introduced the topic of the day Communication Skills. Lorna asked the community what communication is in Lusoga and they mentioned Empuliziganya. Literally translated as understanding each other in a conversation. We were also able to learn that communication skills is the sending and receiving of information with an effective feedback. Communication is barely communication if it’s one sided. At feet that we looked at different means of communication like phones, computers, letters, drums where we learnt that in the community when a woman dies they drum 3 times, if it’s a man they drum two times. If it’s a Muslim they drum and then the Imam makes a call for prayers, among others. We also looked at the different ways we communicate with our bodies and how they can translate to other communication if not interpreted well. We looked at eyes, shoulders, fists , fingers, mouths , face to face , legs among others. When we interpreted these body signs we can be able to know what one is communicating. Next week they will be looking at importance of communication as well as barriers of communication . Because the community members cane late, we did not finish what was planned. Lorna left them homework and after they present , Lorna will teach on Communication styles. We will go back to this same group. The chairman thanked Lorna for the lesson and asked that they come back to group D and finish this lesson since most people were not there due to a funeral.
