Notes
Harriet went to Igerera A to introduce the Healthy and safe kitchens program to the second group in the community. She reached at the meeting place and found only the community local leaders and the participants were still in the gardens/ had not yet gathered for the meeting. She asked the local leaders to walk with her to the homes to see their home facilities whether they meet standards for healthy and safe kitchen program as well as mobilize the participants for the meeting. Most participants had kitchens, latrines and shower areas but were cooking on the traditional three stones fire. After walking through a few homes , participants gathered for the meeting. During the introduction meeting Harriet asked the participants to discuss the gender roles. The community broke down the day today activities done in the home. At the end the all agreed that the women do most of the work at home as the men watch, demand and abuse women Incase work is not properly done or finished on time. Also it was realized that women are always angry and moody because they are ever tired due to the many activities they do at home and men don’t appreciate or instead they blame them especially when they delay to cook food. Men were also asked to help their wives in domestic chores, to treat them as partners not as slaves. One of the male participants called Mudofu testified that the women grow older than men because of stress, he therefore argued men to work together with their wives for the betterment of the family. Men also stressed that their wives suffer with smoke in the kitchen that has caused most of the women to suffer from chest problems and eye problems due to smoke. They also said that is the reason why the men can’t help their wives to cook food because the kitchen in smoky. Harriet told them that the program will empower them with a skill of building fuel efficient stoves which vent out smoke thus providing a conducive environment for both men and women to cook together as well as have time together to share other developmental issues since it cooks fast and food can cook by itself. The participants were very excited for the program and promised to participate in order to overcome such challenges.
