Notes
The meeting started with Lorna meeting the children and then later the parents. With the children we had two groups as usual primary 4 and below where we talked about the importance of prayer and sleeping under a well treated mosquito net. We talked about the treated mosquito net because the chairman had reported to Lorna the number of cases of children falling sick and even previously Lorna was able to see many children with carnulas on their hands. We talked about maintenance of the net how to hang it up well and when torn sew it up. We also looked at values of education and what are those things that can make them as children drop out of School. Elvis mentioned that he wants to become a pilot and therefore for him, the value of education is that he can get to become a pilot and help his parents. Muhammad mentioned when one is educated the family is respected. Education gives one opportunity to travel and also that it helps you to be able to read and write, to make friends who are also educated among others. On the things that can lead one to drop out of school, they mentioned that joining bad peer groups for example groups that drink alcohol and do drugs, another was poverty , early pregnancy , ignorance where Elvis mentioned those parents who tell their children even them they did not go to School so why should they also go to School. Parents sending their children to work for example in the sugarcane plantation and they get used to getting this money and don’t want to go back to school because they are used to getting money. Lorna advised them about bad peer groups and the importance of staying in school and that since they know the things that can easily make them drop out of School to avoid them if they want to fulfill their dream. With the Parents, we continued with our topic of communication Skills. We reviewed the previous lesson which was on what communication is , means of communication and the different body /non verbal signs we use to communicate. After this we looked at importance of communication. The nabakyala said it brings about unity and love in the family. She mentioned an example in the family where children are consulted, where parents have time to talk to their children, spouses, there will be love, unity. Another importance was it brings development because people are on the same page and agree and understand each other. It also discourages rumors and resolves conflicts. It also promotes friendship. When there is good communication and open environment to communicate at home, children are free to express themselves concerning issues affecting them among others. After this we looked at the barriers to communication for example : Age whether young or old can affect ones response to heed to communication either because one is too young and because of that the response to them is hard and same with the old person because one would think they are too old to communicate , advise on anything important, we looked at time too as a barrier like the different time zones, but also the times that we discuss important issues. We gave an example of a wife asking for money for personal use but asks for it at a time when her husband is stressed maybe about work, the response that they may get will be different from if they waited and talked to this person in their time of peace when well rested. One person then asked what is the appropriate time to communicate then?. Nsubuga mentioned when everyone is peaceful and well rested and it can be different for every person. We also looked at anger as a barrier if one is angry, communication cannot take place. We also looked at the communication styles of Attack and Avoid and we translated what Attack and Avoid is in Lusoga where Attack is okulumba and Avoid is okwewala. We were able to see the characteristics of an Attack person for example; they are rebellious people, they love to be heard and right all the time, they talk on top of their voices, they love to fight, they love to revenge, they are sacarstic, they put their rights above other peoples , they are easily angered among others. We looked at Avoid characteristics like feeling ill, feeling the victim all the time, speaking behind peoples backs, taking it out on the wrong person, sulking in silence, avoiding the problem among others. We looked at the disadvantages of Attack and the advantages and disadvantages of Avoid among others. We will start from there next week. Challenge The community members came late to the meeting but we were able to resolve the matter and they promised to be on time next week. Another challenge was the issue of their health centers not having drugs and requested for help from Kibo.
