Notes
The meeting started with an opening prayer, and a song and drama from the community members. The song was about one of the challenges that face our children that is HIV/AIDS. In the song, the message was to encourage everyone to play their part when it comes to fighting stigma and HIV/ AIDS and the consequences that come from one getting infected with HIV /AIDS. In the Drama, they acted out on peer pressure where we saw waiswa convincing Mary to have sex with him and despite Mary’s concerns of pregnancy and HIV/ AIDS, Waiswa mentioned that they will use a condom. We however see both parents of Waiswa and Mary encouraging them to keep Away from sex and concentrate on their studies however they did not listen to this advise and went ahead and Mary got pregnant. It was interesting because the song and the drama introduced us to the topic of the day the “ missing Life Skills”. Lorna asked the community members from the drama they saw, what went wrong, what was the missing life Skill or what Life Skill was used. One man mentioned that in the drama we saw Mary’s mum sitting her down and telling her not to listen to boys , to stay away from peer pressure to continue with her studies and bring them out of poverty but Mary wasn’t listening. We saw the missing Life Skills being listening and taking Action not just listening and doing nothing. Jane also mentioned that another missing link is parents continually talking to their children not just once but often and providing for them their basic needs and being exemplary that is role models.Lorna added here that the little things that make our children fall in trouble is small basic needs like knickers, pads and encouraged parents to buy these little things to avoid the costs later. Lorna added self esteem and confidence as a missing life skill in the children . Referring to the drama acted earlier , Lorna encouraged parents to instill these skills to their children so they are not pressured into sex or any other thing. To stand their ground no is a no. Another woman mentioned that Parent’s need to give work to boys as well referring to the drama acted that Waiswa was roaming around but Mary was always doing housework but we saw Waiswa looking for Mary still. She encouraged parents to distribute work evenly between girls and boys and this will reduce cases of idleness which leads them to fall into such traps. In conclusion we had 2 people explain to the community members what the bridge model is about. We had Ivan the secretary and Nabirye explain to the group which they did and was impressive . Lorna then came in to make some small changes and appreciated the community for coming to the meeting and asked them to teach others what they learnt also.
