Notes
Maria went to Kalitumba to carry out a door to door evaluation on pregnant mothers, breastfeeding mothers, and the general hygiene of the community. The VHT together with Maria walked home to home checking on pregnant mothers, breastfeeding mothers and the general hygiene of the community. Maria had short discussion with one of the pregnant mother called Martha whom she advised to start preparing for the coming baby but she told her that she had saved a few clothes from her mother because her husband couldn’t afford buying new ones. Maria advised her to wash and iron them then keep them in a clean dry place. Maria gave her a Mama kit and she was encouraged to visit the hospital for antenatal care and checkup. Still during the home visit , Maria came across some members who had delivered from the hospital and appreciated the step they took to deliver from the hospital because this is what the health education program encourages. She then encouraged them to visit the hospital for postnatal care, immunization and also to keep their babies under mosquito nets most of the time so that they do not get malaria during this rainy season. Maria came across another family and the children where eating with dirty hands, the compound was so dirty, and Maria advised Anna to keep the home clean, wash children’s hands before eating any food, wash and iron babies clothes so as to avoid the spread of diseases to the baby. Community members who are active in the health lessons have planted small green vegetable gardens following the lesson they had learnt ( diet and nutrition) with community health education program. To some homes where the hygiene was poor, still Maria encouraged them to cleanup their homes and to come and attend the health education lessons. The general hygiene of the community has improved as compared to the hygiene that was in this village before the health education program.
