Health lesson 14: Domestic Violence

Diana went to Nawandyo B, to continue with the lesson of domestic violence. Diana found when the community had already gathered. Diana first entertained them with music, they danced as they swayed their waists, Diana joined them in the dance. It was really beautiful to see the joy of these community members. Khamadi the secretary said that these moments help them to bond together. He thanked everyone for keeping time and participating in the dance. He thanked Kibo for giving them such beautiful moments. He told the community to be attentive to what is taught to them. Diana thanked them for the wonderful participation and encouraged them to keep up the spirit of love and happiness. Diana told them that, this is symbolic of how a family should look like. She told them to avoid bitterness, hatred, un forgiveness, shouting at their wives / husbands in public. It is from here that Diana asked the community why they got married to each other. Khamadi said that for him he married his wife, because he wanted a friend, Isabirye said for him he wanted some one who would help him wash clothes, John said that he married , because he wanted someone who would help him do chores, Juma said he married because he wanted a companion, Peter said for him, he wanted someone to be a security guard for him, this caused applaud of laughter from the community, Diana commented that instead of Peter being the security to his wife, it is the wife taking up his role, this added more laughter from the community. Diana asked the women why the got married? Yudaya, said that she married, because she wanted to have her own children, Sarah said that she married because she wanted a friend, Betty said that she married because she wanted to gain respect of being called a “mrs”. For example mrs Ziraba, the community kept laughing. Diana thanked everyone everyone for the good participation. She went a head to add on the community’s discussion, she told them when people are in courtship, they have to put it in mind that love is the first thing that should be observed. When marrying, don’t marry someone’s daughter to make her a donkey or a security guard, because marriage is about companionship and enjoyment. When this is realized, domestic violence will be minimized in Nawandyo B community, Diana cautioned the community to promote unity and respect in their families. The respect is not only for men but also for women. This discussion went on as the community participated in the lesson, it was so interesting that the community didn’t want Diana to stop teaching. Diana told them that the lesson will be continued in the next visit. The community kept clapping their hands thanking the community empowerment program for helping their community, it is greatly changing and their neighboring communities are admiring them. Khamadi the secretary told them to keep time and be active as they have been.
