Health lesson 14: Domestic Violence
Notes
Ida went to Ndalike to teach about domestic violence. She found when members were waiting and at the same time reviewing the previous lessons. She thanked the members for the exercise because that makes them remember what they learned. Ida asked the community if they have some domestic violence victims. Mr. Kakaire said that almost the whole community is a victim. Ida continued asking what are some of the violences they are going through? Robinah said that families breaking, men beating their wives and children violating. Mr. Mbode said women have contributed a lot in promoting domestic violence. When a child does something wrong and the father decides to punish him/her, the mother stops the dad and blames him before the child which makes a child think that the father is against her/him. After that quarrels arise and it ends up in fighting. Suzan Kyolina said that polygamy is the source of domestic violence, men keep on piling women in the same house and when the children ( step) start fighting, the mothers too join the fight and it ends up everyone fighting. Brenda a 13 year old girl said that parents segregate among children, this causes hatred in children because they think some are loved so much and others less. The community was active and participated fully in asking questions and giving answers. Ida thanked everyone for being active and sharing what was on their minds. She then defined domestic violence : Domestic violence is when one party inflicts pain on the other. Ida asked the community to tell her some ways to stop or reduce domestic violence in communities. Abenakyo said by attending Kibo lessons because members have no idea. Kiranda said that avoiding all the causes listed above will help. Gonzaga said that by loving their spouses and children than themselves. Ida encouraged the community members to stop doing what causes domestic violence because now they know and can avoid them. She also encouraged the members to mobilize others who missed the lesson to come and learn because some are ignorant and need these lessons. The chairperson Anthony thanked Kibo for the lessons and promised to put into practice what they learn. Mugote closed the meeting with a prayer.
