Notes
Kibo staff Manuela and Lorna went to Ikumbya where they taught on Causes and dangers of early pregnancy and early marriages. At the meeting place we were met by community members mothers, fathers and children singing and drumming on seeing us. After there was enough quorum for the meeting to start, the Secretary read out the Agenda of the day which was opened by a word of prayer and then the children acted out a drama and recited a poem which were all on responsibilities of parents at home. After the performance, they called on Kibo staff Lorna and Manuela to go ahead and teach them. Lorna started by greeting the community members and then asked who would remind the group what the previous lesson was and Ivan mentioned it was on goal setting. Kibo staff then gave 10 minutes to 2 people to go ahead and tell the community members what their goal in life was. Florence and MAria shared as seen in the pictures uploaded where they both shared their goal is to educate their children up to the highest levels of institution and they will do this through hard work and savings. After their presentation Lorna asked them what the homework was about and they mentioned on early pregnancy and marriages. We saw the meaning of early pregnancy when a girl below 18 years gets impregnated and thereafter Lorna asked the community members what the causes to early pregnancy were. Some of the causes mentioned were parents sending out their children late in the night like to the borehole, trading centers where they may fall victim, Children admiring things like soda, chappattis, pancakes , bras, knickers among others. Lorna encouraged the parents to buy the children these things so they don’t find them rare and find other means of getting them since the parents are not providing. What is the cost of a knicker, soda compared to a teenage pregnant mother. We also looked at abusive parents, Absentee parents, peer pressure, Alcoholic parents, rape , defilement, death of parents hence looking for comfort else where among others. We also looked at the dangers of early pregnancy like; death of both the mother and baby during birth, stigma from friends, early marriages, school drop outs, chances of visiting the hospitable are less due to fear, imprisonments for the boy, spousal neglect, poverty, HI/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted diseases. Lorna also encouraged the parents to give their children a second chance to go back to School and to get to know their children’s friends and who they hung out with. Manuela then came in with the lesson of Causes and dangers of early marriages. She asked the community members what were the causes of early marriages. She however started by reminding the community members what the Law of Uganda says that a girl or boy under 18 years are still too young to marry and that it is prohibited. On the causes, the chairman mentioned that irresponsible parents who marry off their children at a young age because of money, 2 cows or a goat. Manuela mentioned that this is wrong and only kills the future of the children. She mentioned that their children are not “for wealth purposes and that parents should stop looking at their children like as marriages material. Other reasons were; poverty, early pregnancy leading to forced marriages, Alcoholic parents who drive their children to go look for a better life, Peer pressure both on the side of the parents and the children’s side. School dropout, poor academic performance which forces the parents to stop paying for their children’s fees and eventually children staying at home grow and get tempted and end up in relationships which were not meant to be in the first place had a child been in School, lack of education among others. After here Manuela asked what could be the dangers of early marriages to these young children?. Some answers given were ; illiteracy , domestic violence cases, ignorance on family planning, spousal neglect, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, poverty among others. Manuela then asked the participants that what they going to do as parents towards theses problems, some of the members suggested that they will continue talking to their children about the values of education and the dangers of early pregnancy and marriages. Manuela encouraged the parents to stay away from marrying off their children and to keep guiding and counseling their children. She asked the children to listen to their parents advise and keep in School.
