Bible Lesson 8: Teaching Children
Notes
Ida went to Bukoma C to teach about chores and responsibilities according to age group. She reminded the community members that they should give chores according to age. The VHT opened up a discussion about chores, where he started by asking that what chores should be given to children from three to four years? Matege said that sweeping the compound(very small) Robinah said that a three year old child is still a baby may be teaching her to take her cup or plate from the eating place to the dish rack. A four year old can sweep or pick rubbish. Namukose said six to eight years old can peal, wash dishes, cook simple food, and dig in the garden. Scovia said that children from twelve to fourteen years can do any kind of chores because by this time they are adults. Girls can even get married, boys can marry so if they didn’t do their chores before, it becomes a problem in marriage. Mr.Erima the chairperson corrected scovia’s statement saying that , that was sometime back when children married at twelve years. But the constitution of Uganda says that a child is a child till eighteen years. So those who marry off their children below eighteen are contradicting with the constitution. Erima the chairperson taught the members what the Uganda constitution says about children. The community members thanked Kibo for the lessons because they got a chance of learning about the constitution for the first time in their lives. Ida concluded by telling parents that a child’s first work is “play” , balance both ( play and chores) also let’s not give them child labor please. For example: working in sugarcane plantations, rice schemes, making bricks, selling things on streets etc. Namukose closed the meeting before it started raining and everyone went back home.
