Notes
Purpose of the visit, Manuela went to Kagulu village to re mobilize community members then after, continue with the previous lessons on Immune system. This lesson is aimed at educating participants so that they can keep their immune systems strong and healthy so that to avoid becoming sick all the time. Manuela reached the village, but surprisingly Manuela good numbers of participants gathered waiting for her to be taught, she greeted them and asked them that where are the rest?they told Manuela that they are coming, Manuela said let’s wait for them for few minutes. After ten minutes, they came. Manuela started her class by requesting one of the volunteers to pray, after prayers, she told the participants that, she had planned to go and move around the village to mobilize some of the participants who don’t want study theses days, but surprisingly Manuela found them already seated, it’s like the fellow participants told them that Manuela was going to talk to them. Manuela encouraged the participants to continue mobilizing their fellow participants to come and study. After that, Manuela asked participants who were around to review the previous lessons to the participants who were absent on that day, one lady called Mustula and Musa lead the exercise. They tried their level best , After that, Manuela also added on and explained to the participants about what she taught previously. Manuela told the participants that, since participants were few in the previous lesson, she only explained to them what immune systems is and it’s parts and how it functions in the human body. Manuela told the participants that, Immune system is the way our body protects it’s self against disease, while Manuela was explaining she told the participants that the immune systems consist of white blood cells and red blood cells, she said white blood cells helps to protects our body against diseases and red blood cells cells helps in circulation of oxygen in and carbon dioxide out of the body and other functions of the immune systems , for example cells like the Microphage they role is to eat , T4 helper is to send signals to other parts of the cells about the invaders and Tb cells etc. Manuela encouraged the participants to eat well balanced diet food, have good rest, do exercise and treat disease as early as possible to promote good immune systems. After revisions, Manuela continued with the lessons of the day, she started by asking the participants, what is antigen ? They responded that they are germs, small insects, caterpillars etc Manuela asked them again, what are Antibodies? No ideas Manuela asked again, what is HIV? They all said the virus that causes AIDS they knew that because in the beginning of this lesson Manuela had explained to them what HIV is and AIDS. After brain storming, Manuela explained to the participants that Antigen are germs that enters our body systems, this can be bacteria, virus HIV etc. Manuela also explained to the participants what Antibodies is, she said it’s a response to invaders to antigen, Manuela explained to the participants that Antibodies are produced by B cell, they work like keys fitting the shape of the antigen in the body. After that explanation, Manuela told the participants that, they are going to demonstrate all what they have learnt in immune system through roles play. Manuela said the game is called the Elephant and Lion game, she told them, in this game we are going to have a baby elephant, the six adults elephants and four adults Lions, Manuela explained to the participants that the job of each animal, the adults Elephant is to protect the baby elephants and the Lions are to fight, jump and try to catch the baby elephant. Manuela called volunteers to come in front, Manuela gave them instructions and told them that she will count from one to three then start, they repeated the games three times. In the first round, the elephant protected the baby elephant well, in the second Manuela reduced the numbers of the elephants and the baby elephant was able to touched by the Lions, In the third round, the baby elephant was eaten up by the adults Lions simply because the numbers of the adults elephant who are the immune systems were reduced. After the role play, Manuela asked the participants questions, what was the baby elephant? They said HIV, STD, Aids after trying then one person said that the baby elephant was the human body, this made Manuela happy, Manuela asked again how about the adults elephants, they said the immune systems finally she asked them what about the adults Lions? They said HIV, the body etc but Mastula gave a correct answer that the Lions are the disease like Malaria, coughs etc. why was the body elephant eaten up by the Lions? Faridah said the immune systems was weak, due to many diseases in the baby. Manuela summarized the game by explaining to the participants that what they saw indicates how our body systems functions Incase it has been attacked by the HIV, Manuela asked them how do they feel after the role play? They said they feel good. After that session, Manuela appreciated the participants for being cooperative during the role play and in answering the questions about the game, she encourages the participants to continue mobilizing their fellow participants to come and study. She gave them homework on How HIV is transmitted and how they can prevent them selves from catching the virus.
