Notes
David and Steven went to nawandyo to continue with the WASH activities because, during their last home to home movement they had assessed the hygiene status of the entire village wasn’t meeting the required hygiene standards. Therefore they had planned their next visit to have a village general meeting, that meeting was intended to bring everyone up to speed and also encouraging them about hygiene, sanitation and facility improvement and standardization. This is because all their home hygiene facilities were old which required them to be maintained and improved upon. The Kibo staff met the residents while they were waiting for them at mr John kige,s home the defense of the village. The chairman of the village mr mulamogi hamudhani started the meeting with an opening prayer . There after he invited the Kibo staff to take the lead in the meeting. Kibo staff started by thanking those who had turned up for the meeting and also appreciating the few who had tried working and improving on their home hygiene facilities. From there they asked the defense mr kige to give a report about the seven members who had refused to work and improve on their sanitation facilities . For example kasimu mpasa he said he had finished his pit but also the construction of the shelter was in progress, kizito buruno also had finished only the pit,Buruno kibunduka also had finished his pit,Kasambago,Paul also had just started on the digging process of his pit.David and Steven were happy with Ibra who used to ran into the bush, hearing from kige that he had started digging his pit about 3 feet deep. They therefore encouraged him to double his effort by finishing up that work. Another one of the seven is waiswa gideon who just left his home and a-lame wife because David and Steven advised him to dig a toilet in his home. Kibo staff asked his wife for his phone number and they called him. They were all happy to hear waiswa replying that he will send money to the wife for the construction of the toilet in his home for the first time.In the meeting, David and Steven encouraged everyone to work hard and improve on his or her old sanitation facility. After that David asked the residents together with the committee members to set a dead line for when they hope to have finished maintaining and improving on their home hygiene facilities. They all agreed that they would have finished before July without fail. Kibo staff set for them the right sizes and standards of their home hygiene facilities which they were supposed to construct and maintain. for example big poles for their dish racks, smeared kitchens, shower areas which were tall enough covering their full bodies, rubbish pits six by eight feet long and three feet deep, the hand washing facility even demonstrated how it should look like. They spent a lot of time during the course of their meeting talking more about the use of hand washing facilities reason being it is the most challenging facility because they had walked along the entire village without seeing any in place .Also they saw a lot of flies in many peoples latrines yet it was a season of rains and ripe mangoes which would cause a lot of transmission of different diseases. Therefore they also taught them the good use of ash in their toilets to chase flies and smell. Steven and David encouraged members to start working together by forming up different groups to ease the work of sanitation improvement. Also they were asked to get to balance between their garden work and sanitation work. In general the hygiene status of the village needs maintenance and improvement .
