Notes
Tom made a visit to Kalalu village to teach the community about borehole ownership and borehole sustainability. When Tom arrived in the village, he found when most of the committee members were gathered. They took some time reviewing the previous discussion about borehole wall fence and the wooden wall fence. The members bought into the new idea of the borehole wall fence because of its benefits over the wooden wall fence. When introducing the Topic of ownership and sustainability, Tom first asked what they understood by the term ownership and sustainability. Several residents tried to give their understanding of the words in which they all agreed that ownership is the first step to achieving sustainability and that they both go hand in hand. Tom asked them about the factors that lead to ownership and some were mentioned like giving up space for drilling the well, working together on collecting borehole money, meeting regularly, setting by laws and implementing some of the decisions passed by the committee through community meetings and not forgetting personal and shared responsibilities for the borehole. The core of ownership Tom also gave supporting factors like putting in place systems that can keep the borehole running like making sure the borehole committee and accounts are supported and active. They agreed that once such factors are implemented, they will achieve sustainability of their borehole and it will stay longer and functional. Tom emphasized that the borehole will not belong and does not belong to kibo but to them as community members and that the borehole responsibilities all are on the residents and the committee members to make sure that the borehole is functional and well taken care of. Tom encouraged members to understand that its will be their well once the borehole is drilled.
