Notes
Diana and Ida went to Bukudumira to teach about the advantages and disadvantages of bride price. The community was ready for the lessons. Swaibu the Secretary requested the Chairman James to say the opening prayer. The chairman thanked everyone for attending in person. He invited Ida and Diana to take them through the lesson. Diana took them through a recap of the previous lesson. Swaibu said he learnt to show love to his children, Ida said she learnt to treat her children with respect most especially the teenagers, James said he learnt that early marriages can lead to fistula and death. He added on that, he loves his children so much that he does not want to lose any. Diana added on telling the community that it is not only James who is worried, but the rest of the community. Each one has to be vigilant on their children. Saidha said that the community should work together to bring up their children like their fore parents did. If they got girls and boys standing in dark corners at night, they would cane them and escort them to their various homes. The whole community agreed that, it is the way to go since some of the parents are busy and can’t take care of their children. Diana said that they are right, but they should not neglect their parental obligations in the name of the community taking care of their children. Diana introduced the lesson of bride price. She asked them what they understand by the word bride price. Safina said that it is when the man pays gifts to the girl’s family( bride). Diana thanked Safina for the correct answer given. Depending on the gifts that are given to the man. Some families dictate what the groom should take to the family of the girl. Diana invited Ida to continue with the discussion. Ida added on that Bride price has advantages and disadvantages. Its advantage is that the bride price brings together the families of the marriage partners. It also brings prestige to the family and the community that the bride comes from. Other families become wealthy from the bride price that is given to them. Saidha said that, the family that is given bride price is respected in the community. Ida told them that however it also has its disadvantages, which are; bride price can make the marrieds to be tied in an abusive marriage. Racheal said that it is true most women are being bartered in their community and no one is talking about it, because the bride price was paid. Racheal also said that most parents who have girls don’t mind whether they are done with school or not, they only want to get ‘rich’ quick from the groom’s side who are paying the bride price. Ida said that it is wrong to marry off girls when they are still young. This discussion continued as the community actively participated in it. Swaibu thanked Ida and Diana for enlightening them. He and the community said that they will revise on the way they do certain things in the community, especially the marriage age, and also to take bride price as away of thanking the bride’s family and not to subject someone’s daughter in torture due to bride price. He also said that children should be given a chance to study until they reach the prime age of marriage.
