Notes
Ida went to Ndalike to teach about poultry farming. She told them that the first thing to be done when keeping chickens, is Love . We must love chickens before we start rearing this will make the work easy. When you love something you cannot harm it but care for it. Ida reminded the community members how grand parents used to encourage children to rear chickens when they gave them a chic to begin with. That’s when Kyokali stood up and gave a testimony. Her grand mother gave her a child and prayed over it to produce and multiply. The chic produced and multiplied, she exchanged chickens for goats and goats for a cow! Ida emphasized that chickens can move us from one step to the other as long as we take good care of them. Musa asked that how can they take care of chickens? Ida replied that when the chickens start looking for laying stations, help them and show them where to lay as you plan to buy a pencil that will be used for egg marking. Get a basket ready for egg collection, every egg layed, mark the egg according to the date, put it in a basket in a cool dry place every day until incubation time. When incubation time comes, get all eggs and sort out those that are not good such as those with cracks, pointed tips, very big, too small, old and dirty ones. Give the remaining eggs to the mother hen for incubation. This process can be used when you want more than one chicken to hatch at the same time. You can start with three chickens. Get some food prepared for giving the incubating chickens to avoid losing them when they go to look for food and don’t come or take long to prolong the incubation time. Prepare some money for vaccines a day before they hatch and some glucose for the chics. When three or more chickens hatch at the same time, it saves you from wasting the vaccine and also makes it easy to plan for them. The community was impressed by the new technology which they said is going to boost their income.
