Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Tape and Jessica went to the village to teach the community about the importance of having a healthy and safety kitchen during a home to home visit. When they arrived, they found Gerald the group chairperson at the meeting place with four other active committee members Namuganza, Ida the VHT, Sanoni, and Nairuba. Before visiting the homes, they first discussed about the current activities going on in the village especially at the upper section. The chairperson reported that the stove building lessons was going on smoothly and the members were actively participating in the lessons while mastering the skills. This was so good to hear and later they walked together home to home at the lower section while monitoring different facilities especially in the kitchens. This time the main activity was to focus on the kitchen safety and hygiene in the kitchens. Kibo staff found some kitchens with poor hygiene and dirty utensils all over and ash scattered. They began teaching each participants how it’s important to always keep their food and kitchens clean on a daily basis to avoid various diseases caused by flies. Jeska and tape encouraged the members to wash all their utensils and spread them outside on a dish rack under sunshine as well as sweeping their kitchens after cooking their food. This is important because it can keep flies away and enable the community to live a healthy life with their family members. Some stoves were observed piled with much ashes blocking the wind from entering while preparing food. This was the major cause of some stoves not cooking well because they didn’t take out the ashes. The community members were so grateful for the lessons taught that day and promised to improve on their kitchen safety and hygiene in the kitchens as much as possible.
