Notes
Maria and Irene went to Kishaike to teach about personal hygiene and oral care. The VHT mr Sanyu welcomed members, thanked everyone for their continuous participation, thanked Kibo staff for the love they show Kishaike as a village. Racheal opened the meeting with a word of prayer, then Sanyu invited Maria to speak to the community members. Maria welcomed everyone, introduced the topic as personal hygiene and oral care, and the discussion started by leaning how we clean our body from head to toe. Members together with Maria discussed the different signs and symptoms of dental health problems, what members use to brush their teeth and how to keep teeth clean& how to keep and mouth clean. Annet said that in case they do not have toothpaste, some people use soap, salt, ash, charcoal, sand among others. Maria discouraged members from using soap as this contains a harmful chemical which may destroy the normal flora of the mouth, sand as well can destroy the outer covering of the teeth making them sensitive, appendix and some other organs in the body. She encouraged members to use salt, charcoal, and ash as they help to disinfect, whiten, and reduce inflammation of the gum especially salt. in case they don’t have toothpaste, Merida demonstrated how she clean her face, eyes, nose, ears and mouth. Maria then gave a clear demonstration on how one should brush or clean his or her mouth, taught members how to brush and floss their teeth, encouraged them to at least brush two times a day that is morning before food and evening after food and bath at least two times a day because bathing is simply refreshing the body. Maria said that the hygiene of the whole family starts with an individual, she encouraged all the participants to help children clean and maintain their hygiene, grooming their nails, bathing, cutting hair short washing and changing clothes, and teach their family members the core values of keeping their bodies clean. Then Irene advised members to take care in this festive season, keep social distance, put on masks and wash hand with water and soap as this was in line with the topic of the day, (personal hygiene and oral care). Sanyu gave a closing remarks encouraging members to stay vigilant and put everything they have learnt in practice, then the closing prayer was made.
