Notes
Kibo staff Enock, Martin, Eliot and Paddy visitors from USA went to check on the progress of latrine construction, dish racks, shower areas, kitchen areas, hand washing facilities, rubbish pits. The visitors wanted to also see how the CLTS program works in communities to teach the residents about the challenges, benefits and importance of sanitation and hygiene as well as see how the community people dig latrines and other facilities on their own. On reaching this village, they met one old man whose latrine visited in the previous visit was almost full. As we started talking to him, he took us to where he is digging his new latrine. Since he is old and about 75years, he cant dig the latrine hole by him self, and therefore his sons are busy helping him to dig the latrine hole and it’s about 7 ft deep though they are planning to dig it to 15ft deep. They will as well construct a proper building structure with brick, cement and sand. Enock continued teaching them on the values of having dish racks, shower areas, use of ash, kitchen areas, clean compounds and use of Rubbish pits. The kids who were at home for holiday, were encouraged to also sweep the compounds daily and use the rubbish pit. In another home of one of the VHTs, Enock was so impressed to see a new pit which is being dug. This VHT called swanga has been so stubborn and he didn’t have good facilities. Kibo staff have been talking to him for about 3 months now to also be an example to the community to have better and good facilities. They met him busy digging the pit although the ground was so hard, he was using the pick axe and is at about 5ft now. His target is to dig up to 15ft deep. They continued to walk around home to home checking on the progress of constructing new facilities and maintaining them, encouraging the residents to always use good Materials to construct facilities to avoid repeating the same things over and over. Some people were telling them that latrines broke due to heavy rainfall. There are many newly constructed shower areas, they can now take showers during the day unlike before where they waited for the night time and used the small bushes around. Enock and Martin also encouraged the chairman and VHTs to strongly emphasize to the residents on the problems of open defection and the diseases that may result. Generally the people are responding so well and many new facilities are still under construction.
