Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements. When he reached the village, he found the committee members waiting for him and after a short discussion about the visitors visit, they started moving around the village checking on sanitation and hygiene progress. During the discussion about the visitors visit, Tom shared with them about the visitors appreciation for the work the committee is doing to help the village improve. Tom said visitors were very encouraged. While moving around the village, the chairman of the village said that they visit homes of some residents who are not working. In the first homes visited, they saw some new dish racks and new pits being dug. One resident was very happy for his new pit and he was very proud to show the chairman and the committee members. He said that he wants to dig 30ft. His neighbour was also found splitting logs to place on the new latrine pit. Tom also shared with him about better ways to construct the latrine especially mixing dirt and using stronger and longer logs for laying on the pit. Tom also encouraged him to put a roof on the latrine to prevent rain water from flowing into the pit. In other homes, one resident has started work on the kitchen for his mum as well as latrine. Tom also took him to see open defecation in his uncles home. When the resident saw it, he said he was going to talk to his uncle and cousins so they can as well dig and construct latrines. Seeing the open defecation he realised that his family was not safe and therefore he vowed to take action. The chairman said he was also going to follow up with other residents to make sure that they are working.
