Notes
Tom and two students made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as seeing a village in its beginning stages of sanitation and hygiene. When they reached the village, they gathered at the vhts place as they waited for the chairman and other residents to join them. During that time, Tom went and checked on a new latrine for the vht. He found when they are working on the structure as well as their new dish rack. Tom thanked them because the vht needs to be exemplary by having all the facilities in her home before encouraging other residents in the village. After that they made a visit to a section of the village where the residents are not working or improving. When they reached there, they met with the man of the family and his wife and together with the committee.Tom shook hands with the man who happens to be the owner of this home. They held a meeting in which they discussed about the value of sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as having all the facilities in his home. Even while in the meeting Tom did not let go of his hand as he knew that if he left him, he would have run off. Fortunately even the brother in law had come to visit and Tom took him around the house and both the brother in law and this man were ashamed of their backyard. Tom later asked the brother in law that if he was offered food in this home, would he eat it?. The brother in law surely agreed with Tom and asked his sisters husband to do something about the situation immediately. The wife was very encouraging as she encouraged her husband to work on the facilities so that his home improves. In this home one can see that there is alot of open defecation taking place. After they also moved to other homes across the road. They found a resident working on his latrine and it was 6ft deep. Tom encouraged the resident to work and finish his latrine. In another home, they found a resident who has finished the pit and the floor and only remaining with the structure. The committee members were very happy about the home and thanked the resident for working while in another home, a single mother has started on a new pit and she is proud and encouraged. The committee members and Tom encouraged her to continue working and finish her latrine and in another home, the pit is done and they have started bringing bricks, sand and cement to start the construction. With in a week. They have finished their dish rack, rubbish pit, shower facility and now they are starting on the construction of the latrine. Tom and the committee members thanked the family for the commitment they have showed in improving on the sanitation and hygiene in their home and after this home, Tom and the visitors left for jinja.
