Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as facility constructions. When he arrived to the village, he found some of the committee members waiting for him at the vhts place. They first shared about the general progress of the as regards sanitation and hygiene improvements. They all said that the village has progressed well even though some homes still need to be visited and encouraged. They also spoke of the challenges of roofing materials especially for those residents that have constructed the latrine structures but don’t have roofing materials. After the discussion the committee members pointed out several homes which they said needed to be visited to check on how they are progressing. They started moving around the village and in the first three homes, they visited, two of them had pits under construction. In the home of mr Geoffrey, they found a pit of about 18ft. They encouraged him to get it finished and constructed on. He said he was waiting to harvest his maize so that he can get some money for buying building materials. They also guided him on how to better construct it. In the home of his brother Bernard, there is nothing taking place yet he needs a new latrine. Geoffrey said he would talk to his brother so that he starts on the latrine as well. In another home, they found when the resident had started on the pit and it was about 6ft deep but said that due to illness, he had not been able to proceed but promised to do so when he gets well while in three other homes, the pits were done and construction of the structures had started. They also visited a home of a young man who recently got married. Even though he had started on a pit for a latrine, he had dug it poorly so the committee members guided him on how to better dig a pit for a latrine. Also, in one home, there were able to counsel a young man who had not wanted to dig a latrine pit for his wife. This came after his wife reported to one of the committee members saying she was tired of sharing the latrine with her parents in law as it is not culturally appropriate. The young man accepted to dig a new pit for a new latrine that his family will use. After moving around the village, Tom encouraged the committee members to move around the village registering all residents that are interested in the slabs as well as iron sheets each with their contributions. They said they were going to meet and share about how to do it. After Tom left for jinja.
