Notes
Alex met with 6 committee members for the borehole located at Nawaikona P/S. Among the committee members that were present was the chairman water committee, Mr. Badagawa, the care taker, the secretary, the head teacher of the school who acts as the advisor, a school teacher in charge of school management and Frank. Together they discussed the roles for each committee and how important it is for the water committee to be active at all times as they are very instrumental to the functioning of the well. This well however has a challenge that it’s mostly used by the school children more 1000 children who mostly do not know how properly to pump the well. The school head teacher admitted that the children fight for water and she has many times talked to the children on how best to use the borehole and pump it. But they are many kids, sometimes it gets very hard. She however said that she can’t give up on telling these kids the right thing to be done. When it comes to contributing money for the borehole account and any future repair costs, the school has been the only one paying for the borehole repair whenever it breaks down but this is because the school charges 2000/= per child at school. However most parents fail to contribute this money and it makes it hard to pay the hand pump mechanic sometimes because there is no money available. The parents agreed with the school that they would contribute money to pay to the school and be able to meet the borehole repair costs. It was agreed that this way continues for each child paying 2000/= for development fee and meet the borehole repair. The water user committee will lead to build the new fence and work on the borehole compound and soak pit. This borehole is expected to be repaired on Monday 23

4717 The school children at Nawaikona P/s getting water during lunch break. This borehole takes between 30- 45 minutes to bring out water.
4720 The borehole serves about 1000 children at this school and more than 80 homes surrounding the school.
4723 As the children pumped the borehole while Alex and the committee members were observing, the chain got disconnected and one of the committee members, Frank helped to connect it before the kids could pump again. It’s such a big challenge as it keeps getting disconnected every time it’s being pumped because the borehole lacks a chain bolt.
