Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Suzan,Tape and Jessica were in Buluvu village with the purpose of introducing the Healthy and safe kitchen program to the community. On arriving there, some of the community members who were already gathered at the meeting place who warmly welcomed them . The Chairperson Lc1 of the village welcomed Kibo staff and immediately opened the meeting with a prayer. Each member in the meeting was kindly requested to introduce him/self as well as Kibo staff which is very important. Then Suzan introduced the program to the Community whereby she asked them to list down the challenges they face while cooking on the three stone open flame. This was very interesting for the men also to identify the challenges their wives go through like smoke, lack of firewood which force them to spend long hours in the bush looking for firewood, too much ash which makes the kitchens dirty ,fire accidents as well as spending long hours in the kitchens inhaling smoke that cause them to suffer from eye and chest problems. They were also concerned how best they can reduce on those challenges. Suzan went ahead and talked about the importance and benefits of the energy saving stove such as using less firewood, saving time for other activities, reducing fire accidents and smoke inhalation among others. This was very important in that it helped them understand the problems they faced while using three stone open flame stoves thus wanting to learn skills of building an energy saving stove which would improve on their wellbeing. Tape went ahead and talked about the main requirements that each home need to have before building an energy saving stove such as a well built kitchen with a fine wall and roof,a rubbish pit,dry rack,a pit latrin with a tippy tap and a bathroom. She also asked the members about the roles and responsibilities of a wife and husband in a home, this made each one understand how important each of them was in a home and it also encouraged the members to come and participate together in the healthy and safe kitchen lessons. Kibo staff thanked the members for their time in the meeting and taking part in the discussions, they also agreed on the date and time together with the members on which the next meeting would take place. The chairman l.c.1 made a final speech by thanking Kibo staff for such a developmental program that they had introduced to their community, and encouraged them to keep continue attending lessons. The meeting was then closed with a prayer from Tape.
