Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on latrine construction especially roofing. When he arrived in the village he found some of the committee members present at the meeting place while others had gone for a funeral. One of the committee members Mr Silve and Mr Kirya said they will also be going to the funeral but said they wanted to first take Tom around to check on latrines and other facilities before they go. Because it was an urgent situation and due to limited time, they started moving right a way and they started from the trading center section where they found when on 6 homes, the latrines were done being constructed on. Also in one home of a lady, the latrine was done as well as her hand washing facility. They also visited a home of mr Charles and he had it on the iron sheets but they were not yet fully secured and done. In one resident’s home, he has finished the construction of the structure on the pit as well as setting the doors but he had not yet started on the roofing. He said he was waiting on the mansion to finish work in one of the residents homes and later help him. Tom encouraged other residents to do the roofing for themselves as it’s not so hard but most of them they could but lacked the tools to do the job. In many other homes, they saw that construction was done. In another home, Tom encouraged the resident to help his father with the roofing of the latrine as his father was old and could not do it. The resident promised to help his father to construct and roof the latrine. As they moved around, Tom also encouraged about hand washing as well as latrine maintenance. He was sharing with the residents how using ash can help eliminate flies in a latrine as well as reducing smell. Some of them said they will be using the ash to improve on their latrines. Tom also encouraged residents about dish racks and shower improvements. After Tom left for jinja
