Health lesson 3: Burns
Notes
Ida and Irene went to Kitukiro and taught about the causes,prevention-and treat burns.the community members were first asked about the knowledge they have on what causes ,how to prevent and how they treat the burns in their homes, different answers were brought which included (causes) open fire cooking, candles, hot cooking stones, boiling water, porridge and sun burns, hot food,steam-especially during the dry seasons when they walk with bare feet, use of soil, urine , urine mixed with faces, cooking oil, saliva, and many others. Irene encouraged the villagers before they do anything like applying all sorts of herbs which she also discouraged that could be infected they must put the burn in cool clean water to relieve the pain. Just like wounds and cuts, a burn causes damage to the skin. Even if you cannot see the a hole has been made in the skin, you should be very careful to keep the burn clean all the time. Do not try open the blister because if opened, germs will have room to invade. Each time you wash a minor burn, remember to examine it for yellow or green or bad odor. If you see those things above go to the doctor for treatment. Irene asked the community to list down some things they can do to avoid getting burn accidents. The community listed as follows, building energy saving stoves. Carrying babies at the back until cooking is done. Putting matches out of reach to children., Stop sending children to cook when adults are absent.avoid serving hot food near children. As the lesson was going on, it started raining which made every one run to their homes to remove the food they had put out to dry. Next time Irene Ngobi will continue from where she stopped.
