Notes
Alex went to this village for a meeting with the village people about encouraging everyone to sustain their sanitation and hygiene standards in their homes. He shared with the village its current sanitation status and told them that by November last year when a third survey was conducted he Kibo , about 87% had met the standards required and 12 homes were still defecating in the open. He told the gathering of about 90 people that Kibo group has spend a lot of time in their village talking about hygiene and sanitation not because they don’t have other villages to go to but desiring the best for them. Two years ago before the Kibo WASH joined in, the village was badly off with so many cases of open defecation but the village has greatly improved since then and so Alex called on everyone that came to the meeting that we need more efforts to encourage even those few remaining individuals to also meet the standards and the village would celebrate together achieving this status. All the village leaders that came to the meeting were told to join the sanitation committee to meet with those individuals remaining with some areas to work on to also complete. Alex also told the village the conditions that the village has to meet before the borehole can be drilled. One being that the village has to be open defecation free with no one pooping in the open. People know the value of a pit latrine and it’s usage. A village contribution of at least 300,000/=, a committee to be in place to aid in the process leading to the drilling of a new borehole and many others. The people were very excited to hear this from Kibo group having told them these conditions. The people accepted to maintain their facilities and talk to the people that have to complete their facilities to finish up quickly. Even the area councilor Mpango Samuel promised to move home to home this week telling all the people to maintain these facilities and contributing money for the borehole construction and drilling . Alex’s next visit will target to move specifically in all the homes that need to be updated with their status in the third survey and know the village hygiene and sanitation status before continuing with the process of preparing the village going through the steps to be met by the village before the borehole can be drilled in Kagulu. While in the meeting, some of the village people managed to contribute 45000/= cash towards the borehole contribution. Alex visited mustafa one of the people who had do no pit latrines and he had completed a new one. Also Aftali completed his new pit latrine recently, Duke completed and the remaining people will be visited to see how far they have gone. Alex together with the chairman Mr. Suula visited Tonny the boy that was recently operated in Jinja to check on his state and good news he was recovering steadily and again the village was very appreciative to Kibo group for the help extended out to this family.
