Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet, Jeska , Tape and Suzan found when the participants had already gathered at the meeting place. They guided them how to come up with policies that will govern them during the implementation of the healthy and safe kitchen program. The women actively participated and agreed that Incase some one comes an hour late after the meeting, she will be fined Ugx 2000 and if some one absents herself from the meeting after getting a stove, her stove should be dismantled so that she also loses it other than cheating those ones who helped her to build it. All the members bought into the idea and said that in case some one is sick, or has a sick family member or lost a dear one , he or she should communicate to the group through the community leaders. After the policies formulation , Kibo staff also grouped them into two groups to quicken the program implementation. During the grouping ,Harriet realized that there are two co- wives married to the chairperson LC1 ( mr.Iduma) who had all along conflicted among themselves and she decided not to put them in the same group to avoid further challenges. kIbo staff asked the two different groups to identify two potential participants to get the first demonstration stove. This was a very challenging moment when some one from the community suggested to begin with all the two co -wives while the rest of the community did not buy into the idea of building two stoves for one man who had two wives. Some people said that they should build one stove for one of the chairperson’s wife but the question was who of the two because no one wanted to pool out so that her co- wife gets a stove before her. Kibo staff counseled these two women and asked them to wait and get stoves probably the next time. They also told them that the goal of this program is to ensure that every one in the group gets a stove and also to empower them with a skill of building stoves. Finally Kibo staff guided the community to chose other people to get the first demonstration stoves. Kibo staff finally built two demonstration stoves as they explained to them the whole process. The interesting part of it these two co- wives did not quit the group though they were denied a chance of getting the first demonstration stoves. Kibo staff asked the group to have another general meeting on Friday 15/feb 2019 to lay strategies on how these two women can collaboratively work together in a group.
