- Introduction
Lorna went to this village to wind up with the HIV/AIDS Awareness topic.
Overview
Lorna reached the meeting place and waited for the chairman and other people to turn up. The chairman later turned up and informed Lorna that unfortunately they had lost a member of their community and burial was the same day at 4. He also mentioned that also most parents had gone to Kigalama Primary School as they had been called for a general meeting at the School. Lorna told the chairman that he should have informed her before. Lorna decided to wait for those who would turn up and see what to do. When a few members turned up, Lorna asked them what they think we should do. They told Lorna to postpone for another day. Lorna agreed to postpone as she could not teach only a few people as it was important that everyone is available as they were winding up the HIV/AIDS topic. She however took this opportunity to talk about their Savings group. The secretary of the group Yafesi informed Lorna that they had written a constitution and he even gave Lorna a copy of it. He went ahead and said they even have a certificate of registration and he also informed Lorna that they were at the stage of opening up a bank Account. Lorna was very impressed as she reviewed the constitution with them. She asked them also that it would be better if they had a uniformed saving amount as of now they were all contributing what they had. Lorna said the challenge with this is that it may bring up fights later when someone said they contributed more than the other. She encouraged them to have proper records as well.
They also showed Lorna a letter they were writing to the NGO board to be granted an NGO status. Lorna said this was great however it is too soon to do that now as they were still at the beginning stages. She said it’s a great vision but they need to take baby steps before they reach that stage. She told them instead they can be a Community Based Organisation. She said they will be asked a lot of requirements which right now they don’t have, she added that transportation to Kampala every time to follow up on this may be a challenge to the group.
Conclusion
Lorna thanked them for working together towards developing themselves and added that she does not have much knowledge on it but will take back the constitution to our Mvule a Community Development Program and seek advice and get back to them.
