Health lesson 2: Diet
Notes
Ida and Irene went to Bupeni to continue with the (diet) lesson As usual they started with reviewing the previous lesson which was introduction to nutrition.the community was happy for having remembered the things taught. They also admitted that they have been selling most of the foods they harvest because of ignorance. They promised to keep enough food for the family and sell some but not all. Irene proceeded with the lesson. Irene also continued to ask the community some of the common foods grown and they gave potatoes, yams, beans ,peas, cassava, matooke,Irish potatoes, pumpkin, rice, ground nuts, and others. She requested the community members to categories the different foods into groups like, foods that give energy, body building foods, and body protecting foods so as to make a balanced diet. Some gave millet flour for breakfast together with a piece of posho flour that stayed overnight then salted cassava for lunch, and white maize meal. She advised on having a diet with at least an energy foods, body building foods, body protecting foods and water. For example one can have millet bread for breakfast, cassava and beans for lunch then millet bread and green vegetables for supper or dinner then she issued small pieces of Manila papers with each color representing different food categories then she asked the members to combine the different pieces to come up with a balanced meal.
