Notes
Tom made a visit to kishaike village to teach about the new dish rack design but to also follow up sanitation and hygiene improvements and construction of facilities. When he reached the village he found when only one member was present at the meeting place as the rest of the committee members were still coming from there, garden. In a short while, they were joined with two other members. When Tom asked Tom about the meeting, they said the, chairman never really communicated well and there was no any mobilization made towards informing residents of the meeting. Together with the three committee members, Tom decided that instead of mobilizing residents on that same day, they would instead do a follow up in homes to see what residents are doing in terms of sanitation and hygiene improvements. When they started moving around, they went to a section that the chairman is from. There they found new dish racks being constructed but all of them were below standard. Tom encouraged them to come to the meeting when the demonstration for the new dish rack will be done. Also in the chairman’s home, they found a new pit done for a new latrine. It was about 18ft. His wife said he was waiting for materials to start the construction. In another home, they found a young child digging a rubbish pit for his home. Tom and the committee members appreciated him for digging the rubbish pit for his home. They encouraged his mother to get a better shower facility as the one in her home was, made of banana fibers. They proceeded to another section of the village where they found new pits and dish racks under construction. In one particular home, Tom encouraged and appreciated the young man for digging a new pit for a new latrine I his home. Tom encouraged him to also talk and encourage his brother to do the same for his home as his Latrice was in the open with no structure as well as it was full. Tom also encouraged those with better latrines to use as to control flies in the latrines as well as controlling smell. The committee members were very surprised when Tom suggested to the, that ash can reduce smell and eliminate flies from latrines. They went to one resident’s latrine and demonstrated it. They were so surprised that after a short while, the flies were leaving the latrine and they could not smell any bad smell from the latrine. After the demonstration, Tom left for jinja.
