Notes
WASH is planning to carry out a baseline survey in this village and so Alex went to this village to meet with the leaders and check on the status of the village after a long while without Kibo being in this village. This is an old Kibo village which has had many Kibo programs including a borehole drilled by Kibo back in 2012. On arrival to the village, Alex met with the borehole secretary called Tatya Simon and moved to check on the borehole status. Unfortunately the borehole broke down about a week ago and majority of the people have resorted to the shallow well in the swamp. The borehole Secretary told Alex that back in February the well broke down and the community got together to fix it but again it broke down. It’s believed that the rods break from the couplers according to the information given by the secretary. The village subscribed to another NGO in charge of borehole repair where by the village was required to pay an amount of 400,000/= per year and the NGO would come out to repair their borehole any time it broke down. It’s however something that many people no longer want to continue with and therefore the village has decided to contribute money to fix it as they did in February. However Alex told the secretary that they needed to call the hand pump mechanic to come and open it up to find out the fault but he said he would do that when the village has contributed some money since the hand pump mechanic will ask for money. Alex also found out that the village sanitation has never been taken up by any other NGO since Kibo did the HIC in this village about 3 years ago. The government has tried to enforce it through the vhts and the sub county health assistant. The WASH program will consider carrying out a baseline survey to know the hygiene and sanitation standards in this village before making a decision on a way forward to either consider to have sanitation program or get it off the list. A few homes that Alex visited, many of the other facilities were missing but had pit latrines in place.
