Notes
While in Mpumiro village, Tom and the committee members visited homes on the upper section to check on facility construction and sanitation improvements. They found 8 homes with new facilities especially pits being dug. In one home they found a young man who recently started digging a pit for a latrine in his home. He is the only boy and his mother is a widow. Tom encouraged him to work and help his mother get a latrine. Tom encouraged the boy to request his friends to help him during the digging. He said he was going to request one of his friends in the village to help him. In one home, they found a new pit of about 8ft. The committee members encouraged the lady to work hard as her house did not have a latrine as there was evidence of open defecation in the potato garden. The lady felt ashamed and promised to work and improve. She also said she was going to work on her kitchen as well. In another home, they found a new shower facility. Tom and the committee members encouraged the resident to get some cement and construct a layer of cement to give the shower strength. For the other homes, there were dish racks being constructed. Tom encouraged and guided them about standards and methods of constructing a good dish rack. Tom encouraged the resident to go and learn from the dish rack they constructed at the chairman’s home as a demonstration. Tom also encouraged the residents about hand washing and encouraged the committee to also put emphasis on hand washing.
