Notes
While in igerera B village, Tom and two visitors went to residents home’s checking on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as facility constructions. They first reached the chairman’s home and from there they were met by three others committee members. Before they started moving around, Tom asked about how the village has progressed especially in hand washing. One of the committee members said that there is some improvement in latrine construction especially for the ho,es that are constructing latrines. He said two residents have constructed the floors for there latrines and only the construction of the structures remain. After a short discussion, they moved to the upper section to the homes were there are latrine constructions and digging of pits as well as checking on hand washing. In one home they found when the resident had dug more to his pit from 10ft to 18ft. Tom encouraged the resident to continue digging to about 30ft because the resident has a big family. In another home, the resident has also continued with the digging of the pit. Tom encouraged his to fill up the old pit as it was open and risky. Three latrines have also been roofed and Tom encouraged other homes to add more grass to the latrines as the old grass has rotten and fallen off the roof of latrine. In four homes Tom encouraged about the construction of hand washing stands and adding a cement coat on them to make them stronger. Tom and the committee members discussed about how to also increase the dish rack coverage. The chairman said him and the committee members will be moving around and encouraging residents about the dish racks. They will also be guiding them about the new method of dish rack construction. In one home they also found when the resident had just laid logs onto the pit and said he was planning the construction of the floor soon. Tom encouraged him about using mud and not soil for the floor of the latrine.
