Notes
Overview Lorna was in this village to teach about early Pregnancy ; it’s causes , dangers. Introduction Previously Lorna taught on causes of early pregnancy and dangers. She had planned to teach a different topic Delaying Sex and then introduce relationship skills however, She found that she was leaving out a vital lesson which was Causes and the dangers of early marriages which in most cases early pregnancy and early marriages go hand in hand in the community. Lorna therefore decided to teach on Causes and dangers of early marriages along with possible solutions. The meeting started with a prayer, the the chairman addressing the community members before inviting Lorna. He urged the community members to pay attention and take these lessons seriously. Lorna then did a preview on the dangers of early pregnancy and then quickly went on to look at the causes of early marriages of which some of these are also the causes of early pregnancies and that’s why these 2 topics are taught concurrently as one can lead to the other. Lorna read to the community members interesting facts like ; Uganda being the 16th country with high prevalence of child marriage in the world. Another interesting fact was that customary marriage/informal marriages where girls live with older man are more common than registered civil/religious marriages. Some of the causes of early marriages mentioned were; Gender inequality - Treating girls as inferior to the boy child, Level of Education- where parents look at educating girls as a waste of resources and time,Poverty - Where girls are looked at as a source of wealth. Lorna encouraged the parents not took look at their children as sources of wealth but investments because they don’t know what the future holds for their children. Other reasons mentioned were ; Greed of some parents, ignorance, peer pressure, Early pregnancy , traditional customs for example where when girls develop breasts, they are seen as ready for marriage. Under the dangers, they mentioned; young girls are being subjected to Domestic violence, they are less likely to receive medical care because they are scared and stigmatized against, School dropout whereby chances of these girls going back to school is minimal, Risk of catching HIVAIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases, Pregnancy, Maternal mortality, limited opportunities to participate in the development of their community among others. Some solutions were also given like; giving the girl child a second chance, Sensitizing parents on this vice, Empowering the girl child, treat both girls and boys the same, Arrest perpetrators among others. Conclusion Lorna did not finish because she had to rush back meet with the visitors from Park Plaza.
