- Notes
- While Tom was in the village, he was joined by four other committee members and together they moved around the village from the chairman’s homes towards the lower section nearing bunaibani village.
In two ho,es near the chairman’s home, there are new pits being dug while the chairman’s brother has started on the construction of the latrine structure. Tom and the committee members encouraged him to construct using good materials as well,as,mixing the ratios well for the cement and sand.
The chairman’s brother said he will discuss with the Manson so that the mixtures are good and the structure is constructed well. Also the chairman has also started improving on his latrine by putting on a new roof.
Along the road towards bunaibani village, they found five homes with new pits as well as two with new dish racks.
Tom and the committee members spent time advising on the digging of the pits especially in two homes were the parents left their children to dig the pits. One of the committee members measured dimensions of the pit for the children and promised to check on them while they dig the pit for the latrine. In another home, the woman was encouraged to talk to her husband to pay another person so that they could get a pit for the latrine. This is because there children could not dig a pit on a rocky area.
Tom and the committee members also encouraged residents about the standards of the dish racks and one resident even though she had good poles for the dish rack, he had not used nails to put it together. She used banana fibers which break easily. She was advised to buy a few nails and construct a,better dish rack. Tom also encouraged the committee members to meet and discuss how the program can be moved faster especially on the lower section. One of the committee members said that it was a leadership problem as no committee member or village leader comes from that section of the village. Tom advised that they move there once in a while to sensitize and encourage residents about sanitation and hygiene improvements
