- Introduction
Lorna went to Kigalama Sabagabo village to review and summarize with the communication skills topic before she introduced the last topic Relationship Skills in this village. The review was to ensure that we are on the same page and that whatever is being taught is being practiced by the community.
Overview
When Lorna arrived the village there was no one at the meeting place however , she was later joined by the chairman and the VHT kakose. Other community members later joined them and the meeting started. Lorna started by asking how the community members are since it’s been a while they last met. She asked how their families and children were. They mentioned that they were well but busy in the coffee gardens as well as harvesting sweet potatoes. About their families they said they were okay except for one home where one youth impregnated a senior 3 student. The parents decided that they should move in together. Lorna asked what the plan for the girl by the parents was to take her back to school or stay with the man.They said they don’t know. Lorna will discuss with Manuela and see how to go about this. After that conversation Lorna begun the lesson of the day. Together they reviewed the importance of good communication and listening to each other as well as they looked at the communication styles and behaviors of Aggressive, Passive and Assertive and Lorna urged them to see where they fall and change accordingly. She mentioned that no one ever solved anything by keeping quiet,She also emphasized talking more to our children and by doing this we can guide them in their path. She also advised the parents to involve the children in the discussions as this will help them know how to handle different decisions in future.
After the review, they went on to the topic of the day Relationship Skills where she introduced the topics involved under a relationship skills like; Gender roles and responsibilities, managing Emotions, a look at bride price. She asked what some of the challenges women and men face in their homes in terms of sharing house chores and other related work. Some women said men don’t help them, others said somethings are for the women alone, others said they share the roles and have no problem with it whatsoever. Lorna mentioned that they were going to look at the different gender roles as is in this community on how they are distributed and shared. However before they could go deeper in the lesson, the wheather started to change and the people requested whether the lesson can be postponed also since they were few that many people needed to be in this lesson. The rains started falling and since there was no big space for people to gather in this home, the people started running to their homes and Lorna also entered the car and left for Jinja. They will be back to continue with this topic.
Conclusion
Together they decided that the next meeting should be next week Wednesday on the 27 November. They each agreed to mobilize themselves to attend the next meeting. Relationship Skills will be the last topic taught here.
